Evening dance music was provided by the popular society orchestra the Meyer Davis Band, which had played at Jackie’s parents’ wedding. The more than one thousand crew and staff were instructed to be attentive to guests, but less formal than their European counterparts. On board with Aileen Bowdoin and Jackie were the Woolworth heiress Jessie Woolworth Donahue, her son Jimmy Donahue, and his friends the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The ship had immediately become the transport of choice to get to Europe for the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Salvador Dalí, and LeRoy Neiman. Above the grand staircase was a massive metal seal of the United States. The striking interiors featured red, white, blue, and gold walls and draperies, and midcentury modern furniture, rather than faux old-world antiques. Manufactured entirely in America, the SS United States was conceived to be a symbol of an ascendant postwar nation, proudly declaring itself the most powerful on earth.Įvery aspect of the ship’s vision and execution was intended to convey a patriotic aura, starting with its two distinct red, white, and blue smokestacks.
